Shell PLC (SHEL  ) shares rose in early trading on Thursday after the energy company reported third-quarter adjusted earnings nearly doubled to $10.81 billion from $5.43 billion in the prior-year quarter.

Adjusted earnings reached their highest level since 2022, according to CNBC, supported by stronger refining margins, higher realized LNG prices and increased Integrated Gas volumes amid the Middle East conflict.

Shell also raised its quarterly share buybacks to $5 billion from $3 billion.

Earnings Snapshot

Shell reported adjusted earnings of $3.86 per American depositary share, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $3.65.

Revenue totaled $92.848 billion, missing the Street estimate of $99.725 billion.

Cash flow from operations reached $21.0 billion during the quarter. Net debt declined to $39.7 billion at quarter-end from $41.8 billion in the second quarter.

Integrated Gas Production Rises, Upstream Output Declines

Integrated Gas production increased 22% to 772,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, driven by the acquisition of ARC Resources Ltd.

LNG liquefaction volumes fell 4% sequentially to 7.43 million metric tons, mainly due to increased planned maintenance across the portfolio.

Realized liquids prices declined to $69 per barrel from $80 in the previous quarter, while realized gas prices rose to $8.30 from $7.20 per thousand standard cubic feet.

Upstream production decreased to 1.802 million barrels of oil equivalent per day from 1.824 million in the second quarter, primarily due to production-sharing contract effects and natural field declines.

Marketing And Refining Performance

Marketing sales volumes edged up to 2.58 million barrels per day from 2.57 million in the prior quarter. Mobility sales increased to 1.888 million barrels per day from 1.867 million, while lubricant sales declined to 66,000 barrels per day from 75,000.

Refining margins reached a record $42 per barrel, up from $24 in the second quarter. Together with higher realized LNG prices and increased Integrated Gas production, stronger refining performance supported the company's quarterly results.

Fourth-Quarter Outlook

For the fourth quarter, Shell expects Integrated Gas production of 1.080 million-1.180 million barrels of oil equivalent per day and LNG liquefaction volumes of 7.3 million-7.9 million metric tons.

The company forecasts upstream production of 1.70 million-1.90 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Shell also expects marketing sales volumes of 2.40 million-2.60 million barrels per day, refinery utilization of 92%-100% and chemicals manufacturing utilization of 78%-86%.

SHEL Stock Price Activity: Shell shares were up 2.66% at $107.99 in early trading Thursday.
