Crude Oil Reaches Five-Week High
Crude oil rose above $102 a barrel on Friday, marking its highest price level in five weeks. According to Trading Economics, energy markets gained around 3% this week, reflecting a third consecutive weekly advance. The sustained rise in oil prices directly heightens operational expenses for airlines, putting downward pressure on carrier valuations across the sector.
The energy price spike follows growing expectations that the U.S. could resume strikes against Iran in the coming weeks. Iran's army chief stated that the country's military was prepared for asymmetric warfare after strengthening its capabilities. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said Washington was not negotiating with Tehran and suggested that developments could occur soon, according to Trading Economics.
Earlier Sector Rally Cooldown
The Friday decline comes after a broad spike in airline stocks on Thursday. Shares of airline companies traded higher in sympathy with Southwest Airlines Co.
Technical Analysis
From a longer-term trend perspective, Delta is still up 29.63% over the past 12 months, but the near-term chart has weakened as price slips back under key intermediate moving averages. The stock is trading 5.2% below its 20-day SMA ($80.44), 5.8% below its 50-day SMA ($80.95), and 9.1% below its 100-day SMA ($83.92), which keeps rallies looking like they're running into overhead supply.
The more important battleground is the 200-day area: at $76.63, the stock is essentially flat versus the 200-day SMA ($76.44) and 200-day EMA ($76.75). When price chops around the 200-day, traders often treat it as a "line in the sand" for whether the longer-term uptrend is intact or rolling over.
The moving-average structure is mixed: the 20-day SMA is below the 50-day SMA (bearish for the short-term trend), but the 50-day SMA is still above the 200-day SMA (a constructive longer-term setup). That combination often produces "range-and-retest" behavior-sharp dips toward the 200-day followed by rebound attempts that can stall near the 50-day/20-day zone.
