Susquehanna analyst James Friedman said a new interchange category for agentic transactions could emerge as AI-driven commerce expands, although the recently released interchange tables do not yet include one.
Visa believes adoption could follow a path similar to e-commerce and mobile payments, which supported its growth.
Its payment credentials, authorization, security, know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) processes, along with consumer and merchant protections, could remain critical as AI agents transact on users' behalf, Friedman said.
Friedman noted that Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol is designed to help merchants and payment infrastructure providers securely identify and transact with Visa-approved AI agents. The analyst believes this shift could strengthen Visa's role in digital payments.
Friedman updated his estimates to reflect the company's non-operating expense guidance for the fourth quarter and full year.
