The underlying idea is relatively simple: use AI and accelerated computing to make wireless networks more efficient. Nokia says its AI-RAN platform has already demonstrated more than 20% spectral-efficiency gains, with advanced AI models targeting more than 2x efficiency over time. Higher spectral efficiency means operators can move more data through the spectrum they already own, potentially increasing network capacity without relying solely on additional spectrum or hardware.
That is where Nvidia enters the picture. Nokia combines its anyRAN software with Nvidia accelerated computing to run AI models at radio-network timescales. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has described the radio access network as "the next AI infrastructure," framing the opportunity as a shift from using AI to simply optimize networks toward making the network itself an AI computing platform.
Nokia Wants AI at the Edge
For Nokia, AI-RAN could turn its existing network footprint into a software-driven growth opportunity.
The company's AI-native RAN platform, powered by Nvidia computing, is expected to begin pilots later this year and reach commercial availability in 2027.
Nokia also sees the technology as a path from 5G and 5G-Advanced toward AI-native 6G.
Nvidia's AI Footprint Expands
The bigger investor implication may be for Nvidia.
The company has built its AI dominance around data-center computing, but AI-RAN opens another potential layer of demand: the telecommunications network itself. Nokia brings the radio expertise and operator relationships, while NVIDIA supplies accelerated computing and AI software.
The commercial opportunity is still developing. Today's operator trials must ultimately demonstrate that the additional computing produces enough network capacity and economic value to justify deployment at scale.
But the direction is becoming clearer. As AI workloads spread from centralized data centers toward the network edge, Nokia is positioning its radio business to become part of Nvidia's expanding AI infrastructure ecosystem - and cell towers could become another place where GPUs matter.
