Tesla, Inc.'s (TSLA  ) Robotaxi fleet in Texas has surged 128% in just over a month, bringing Elon Musk's autonomous ride-hailing operation within 15 registered vehicles of Alphabet Inc (GOOG  ) (GOOG  )-owned Google's Waymo.

The latest state-record snapshot lists 1,244 vehicles under Tesla Robotaxi LLC, compared with 1,259 for Waymo. The narrowing gap gives investors a striking measure of Tesla's push to scale, but the registration figures do not show how many vehicles are actually carrying paying passengers.

Tesla's Robotaxi Fleet Takes Off

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles' automated-vehicle registry lists individual vehicles by operator. Tracker data show Tesla's count climbing from 546 on Sept. 30 to 1,244 on Nov. 1, a 128% increase.

The latest additions include 40 entries recorded under the apparent model-name typo "Modey Y," alongside 631 Model Ys and 573 Cybercabs. The tracker's model labels should be treated cautiously, but the overall registered fleet total is clear.

Waymo Still Holds a Narrow Lead

Waymo's roster includes 863 Jaguar I-PACE vehicles and 396 Zeekr RT vehicles, according to the same registry tracker.

Tesla's recent additions have quickly narrowed the gap: its count rose by 274 in the seven days through Nov. 1, while Waymo added 52 in the same period.

The comparison is useful, but it is not a direct measure of ride-hailing scale. Registration records do not disclose how many vehicles are deployed in each city, how often they complete trips or how much revenue they generate. Nor do the figures show that every registered vehicle operates without a human safety monitor.

Tesla Fleet Includes Both Model Ys, Purpose-Built Cybercabs

The Model Y can accommodate more passengers, while the Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle designed specifically for autonomous ride-hailing. The mix suggests Tesla is using different vehicle formats as it builds out the service, rather than relying on the Cybercab alone.

Management has described rapid progress. On Tesla's third-quarter earnings call, Musk said the Cybercab fleet in Austin had grown tenfold in roughly a month. CFO Vaibhav Taneja said cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles increased eightfold during the quarter, with weekly double-digit growth.

For investors, the next milestone is not simply overtaking Waymo on a state registry. Tesla must show that its growing fleet can deliver reliable rides, attract repeat customers and generate attractive economics.

The 15-vehicle gap makes the rivalry easy to measure; utilization and paid trips will determine whether the expansion becomes a meaningful business.
