McDonald's Corporation (MCD  ) has named Ian Borden as the company's new president of international markets.

Previously, Borden was President of International Developmental Licensed Markets (IDL). Now as President, International, he oversees IDL and the International Operated Markets (IOM).

This rearrangement of leadership follows news last month that former McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook had a relationship with an employee, which led to Easterbrook to be dismissed from his position. With Easterbrook out, Chris Kempczinski has taken over as president and CEO. Kempczinski was previously head of McDonald's USA, which is a position now filled by Joe Erlinger. Erlinger was previously President of IOM.

"Ian has a proven record of focusing on the customer to deliver profitable business growth while strengthening collaboration with our global franchisee community," said Kempczinski. "His deep experiences leading McDonald's in markets across the world uniquely position him to connect the dots to drive strong results. I'm delighted to announce his expanded role for McDonald's and am confident he and the talented leaders in our wholly-owned and developmentally licensed markets will make McDonald's even better throughout the communities in which we operate."

The company's international markets have been performing well, with a reported 5.9% of global sales growth.

Borden seems optimistic about where international markets is leading McDonald's and the work that's cut out for him in taking the company to that next level. "Our international markets have strong momentum and incredible growth opportunities," said Borden. "I look forward to working closely with franchisees, supplies and company teams across all of our international markets to strengthen the ties between McDonald's and our customers."

McDonald's has over 38,000 restaurant locations worldwide in over 100 countries. As for the company's stock, it has a market value of $156 billion and was up 14% as of October 2019. However, quarterly earnings fell short of estimates.

Long-time competitive fast food rivals of McDonald's have been Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International (QSR  ), and Wendys Co (WEN  ).
