Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS  ) reported a year-over-year revenue increase in the third quarter, as CEO David Solomon stated that interest rate shifts cause market challenges, while capital markets activity maintains a high pace.

Navigating Market Volatility

Speaking on the firm's earnings call, Solomon addressed the impact of a 75-basis-point movement on the 10-year Treasury yield. "What creates headwinds for markets is when you have very, very abrupt moves," Solomon said. However, he emphasized the resilience of the underlying U.S. economy, corporate earnings growth, and the labor market.

"We have a very, very strong underlying economy. The economy continues to be very, very resilient despite some of the headwinds. We have an extraordinary tech super cycle," he said.

Comparing the current period to peaks earlier in the year, he noted the shift in transaction levels. "I would call it like a top, top decile environment for kind of market activity and capital markets activity. But now we're in a top quartile environment, and that's still really, really good when you think about long periods of time," Solomon stated.

Equities Drive Revenue Surge

The investment bank reported net revenue of $18.68 billion and earnings of $17.01 per share, beating consensus estimates. The performance was largely driven by the Global Banking & Markets division, where equities revenue surged 72% to $6.44 billion due to strength in derivatives intermediation and financing.

Additionally, the firm's total assets under supervision reached a record $4.10 trillion. Solomon noted that the firm's investment banking backlog remains robust despite strong revenue realizations in the quarter.

AI Infrastructure and Leadership

Looking ahead, Solomon highlighted the U.S. data center build-out for artificial intelligence (AI), estimating it could require "north of $10 trillion of investment through 2032." He added that client demand for compute capacity currently exceeds supply, positioning the bank to potentially finance infrastructure projects.

Finally, Solomon addressed media reports regarding his tenure, stating firmly that "there is no succession transition or timeline underway" at the firm.
