Walt Disney Co's (DIS  ) Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts scored $76 million in domestic openings from 4,330 theaters and $86.1 million in foreign sales, according to Box Office Mojo.

The results of the Jake Schreier directed and Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Sebastian Stan starring compare to Eternals' $71 million and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($75 million) domestic openings, the Guardian reported on Sunday.

Relatively bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies including 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine scored a $211 million opening reaching $1.34 billion worldwide.

Marvel spent ~$180 million on Thunderbolts production. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore told the Guardian that he expects Thunderbolts' reviews and word-of-mouth to help it gain traction.

Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc (WBD  ) also faced stiff competition from Ryan Coogler's Sinners, which collected $180 million domestically and $237 million globally in its third week.

Warner Bros' A Minecraft Movie, in its fifth weekend, grossed nearly $400 million in domestic sales and over $873 million worldwide. To boost footfall, Warner Bros added more attractions, including Block Party Edition screenings.

Disney purchased Marvel for $4 billion in 2009. The four Avengers films rank among the top 15 highest-grossing movies ever. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has added approximately $13.2 billion in value to the company as of August 2024.

In March, BofA Securities analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich said Disney's second quarter is on track with a strong Parks rebound and film slate. The analyst expects DTC (the Direct-to-Consumer segment, which primarily consists of its various streaming services, including Disney+, Disney+ Hotstar, ESPN+, Hulu, and Star+) growth, cruise gains, and ad momentum despite macro headwinds.
