Coinbase Stock Trading Goes Live
On Tuesday, Coinbase stock and ETF trading officially kicked off, adding to the company's recent product expansions like prediction markets.
The company's stocks and ETFs are available to buy, sell, and manage for U.S. customers. Trading is live 24 hours a day, five days a week.
Coinbase said that over 8,000 stocks and ETFs are available at launch. Some of the stocks and ETFs are available to buy as fractional shares starting as low as $1 with instant funding via USD or USDC.
The zero-commission trading can be done within the Coinbase app and with an existing account, creating a "unified portfolio" of equities and cryptocurrencies.
The company said that this launch is a "major step" in connecting traditional markets with the digital asset economy.
"The traditional financial system shouldn't stop just because the sun goes down," Coinbase said. "At Coinbase, we believe everyone should have the ability to react instantly to market-moving news."
Coinbase said the initial launch covers leading equities with plans to expand with thousands more stocks in the coming months.
The company also plans to launch 24/7 trading abilities for U.S. equities for users outside the U.S. later this spring, along with plans to offer tokenized stocks in the future.
"Soon you will be able to trade anywhere in the world, leverage your equity holdings as on-chain collateral, and make instant payments backed by your stock value."
Coinbase said the launch of equities trading builds on a goal of a "faster, more accessible financial future" for users.
"The future of finance is being built on Coinbase. Our Everything Exchange vision is about removing artificial boundaries between asset classes and building for the next generation of markets."
Coinbase Partners With Yahoo! Finance
Alongside the launch of stock and ETF trading for Coinbase U.S. users, the company is partnering with Yahoo Finance, the most-visited financial news site globally with more than 150 million monthly visitors.
As part of the partnership, Yahoo Finance will allow users to not only research assets, but also to buy or sell a stock or ETF with one click. A blue button above equity and crypto charts allows users to trade the assets directly on Coinbase.
The partnership also sees Yahoo Finance users being offered a free one-month trial of Coinbase One Basic.
"The partnership combines Yahoo Finance's trusted coverage with Coinbase's trading capabilities and, over time, will deliver deeper crypto data and insights," Yahoo said in a blog post.
Yahoo said that demand for crypto information and data has increased, which the Coinbase partnership will help with.
"This partnership addresses a clear shift in investor behavior toward considering digital assets alongside traditional investments," Yahoo Finance General Manager George Leimer said. "Coinbase is a leader in building the next generation of investing infrastructure, and together we see an opportunity to create smarter, more intuitive experiences that meet investors where they are - and where they're going."
Coinbase Head of Consumer and Business Products Max Branzburg said the partnership helps millions of users gain access to data for stock and crypto assets.
"Together we're making crypto trading more approachable, and giving everyone the resources to pursue whatever investment strategy works best for them across multiple asset classes," Branzburg said.
