"Diluted cleaning solution, which is used on food processing equipment, was inadvertently introduced into a production line at one of our factories," the company wrote in a press release. "The Company is actively working with retail partners and distributors to remove potentially impacted product from circulation."
Kraft says that it learned about the contamination after it received "several consumer complaints" about the taste of their products. The food company says that affected products can be returned to the store where they were purchased and warned customers not to drink the affected juice.
"Kraft Heinz is committed to upholding the highest safety and quality standards," the company wrote.
Kraft is offering to reimburse customers for the contaminated juice cases. All affected cases include four cartons with 10 pouches per carton and have a "best when used by" date of June 25, 2023. The universal product code found on affected cartons is 087684001004, and the code found on the larger case is 876840040900.
The company added that customers can call 1-800-280-8252 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays to check if the product they purchased has been affected.
According to The New York Times, a spokesperson for Kraft Heinz declined to answer questions regarding which states may be covered in the recall or how much cleaning solution was present in the pouches. The spokesperson also didn't say how many consumer complaints the company received or if any customers have reported adverse health effects.
This isn't the first time that customers have complained about unexpected substances in their Capri Sun pouches. In 2012, a customer reported finding a worm in a Capri Sun, though the company responded that it was most likely mold, not a worm. Then, last fall, customers began sharing posts on social media that apparently showed mold in their Capri Sun juice pouches. No recalls were issued following as a result of those events.
