As the much-anticipated iPhone 15 release draws near, some Apple Inc.
What Happened: iPhone 14 and 14 Pro owners are taking to social media to voice concerns over rapidly diminishing battery capacities within a year of purchase.
The issue came into the spotlight when Sam Kohl, from AppleTrack, revealed that his iPhone 14 Pro's maximum capacity had plummeted to 90%.
Joanna Stern, a Wall Street Journal senior tech columnist, also said that her iPhone 14 Pro's battery capacity had already dipped to 88%. She also questioned whether it could be attributed to extensive iPhone usage, having already reached 450 charge cycles, or the rapid charging process and heat generation.
YouTuber and tech expert Aaron Zollo also took to X, formerly known as Twitter, saying battery health problems in iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max appear to be linked to glitchy software that demands more frequent charging.
He revealed that during iOS 17 beta phase, he needed to charge his device twice daily.
Kohl, Stern, and Zollo are not the only ones sharing concerns about their iPhone 14 and 14 Pro's diminishing battery capacity.
Battery Health Monitor: Apple introduced the battery health monitor with the iOS 11.3 update, allowing users to manage performance throttling and mitigate aging battery issues. The measure was implemented in response to the "batterygate" scandal, which resulted in significant settlements for the company, reported The Verge.
Apple did not immediately respond to Benzinga's request for comments.
Why It's Important: Typically, iPhones maintain their battery capacities for around two years, making this early decline a cause for unease among users. Apple's official guideline states that iPhone batteries should retain up to 80% of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles.
Replacing the battery in an iPhone 14 series model after the one-year warranty will cost users $99.
Meanwhile, the upcoming iPhone 15 series is expected to come with larger battery sizes. The increase, purportedly ranging from 10% to 18%, aims to offer users a more sustainable and reliable battery performance.
