Nike (NKE  ) recently announced that it wants to begin a new program called "Nike Refurbished," which will aim to recondition shoes so that Nike customers can buy them again. The program works to make three types of footwear last: "like new"; "gently worn"; and "cosmetically flawed."

Nike Refurbished will be made available in at least 15 U.S. Nike stores in the future. It was created with the intent of reducing the amount of waste and wear in the shoe industry.

In the program, a shopper will first be required to return a pair of shoes to Nike. Then the shoes are looked over, refurbished, and provided with a condition grade. Various products and tools are utilized in order to maintain the condition of the shoes, so as to keep them as refreshed-looking as possible. After the shoes are returned to the store for resale, prices are chosen based upon footwear type and condition grade.

In order to specifically be eligible for this type of refurbishment, the shoes need to be taken back to the Nike stores within 60 days of having made the purchase.

The goal of this particular program mainly exists in order help begin more sustainable to the retailer's business model. To this day, more than 75% of Nike shoes and apparel possess recycled material of some kind. Nike is in the process of exploring several different business models in order to commit positive actions such as to increase sustainability and to decrease the emission of harmful greenhouse gases. "

When I think about the global climate crisis and the role of a company like Nike, I think about our mission and values," said Chief Sustainability Officer Noel Kinder, in a press release.

Overall, the program of Nike Refurbished seeks to employ a positive cause, beneficial for the customers, the company of Nike, as well as the environment. Whether people will take advantage of this particular program has yet to be seen, but there seems to be a great deal of usefulness for it already.
