Bitwise executive Matt Hougan says every path the AI economy could take, boom, bust or nothing dramatic at all, ends with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) higher.

Hougan wrote in a Wednesday note that he's been fielding an unusually wide range of questions at conferences lately, from whether Fed rate decisions trigger a recession to whether AI leads to infinite abundance or human extinction.

To cut through that uncertainty, he borrowed a trick from childhood "Choose Your Own Adventure" books: tracing every path to see where it actually leads.

Scenario One: AI Delivers Superabundance

Productivity and GDP soar in this path, making intelligence-based work like software, legal services, and diagnostics extremely cheap.

Hougan argues that abundance acts as a tailwind for scarcity, since investor money flows toward things that can't be reproduced, like waterfront land, fine art, gold, and Bitcoin.

Scenario Two: The AI Bubble Bursts

High-growth assets sell off hard here, data-center borrowers default, and insurers holding billions in AI-linked bonds face real trouble, a setup Hougan compares to 2008.

Bitcoin initially falls alongside other risk assets, but he expects central banks to respond with rate cuts and balance-sheet expansion.

Given how central AI infrastructure has become to the economy, Hougan puts the odds of a government bailout at "nearly 100%," a scenario he says would flood the system with money and send Bitcoin sharply higher.

Scenario Three: Nothing Dramatic Happens at All

The third path is the boring one: 3% growth, 4% interest rates, AI adding modest economic value without transforming anything, and a soft landing.

Hougan says Bitcoin simply keeps doing what it's already doing in this scenario, drawing continued ETF inflows, advisor adoption, and corporate and sovereign treasury allocations, as government debt keeps climbing and demand for store-of-value assets grows alongside it.

Why the Specific Path Doesn't Actually Matter

Hougan's broader point extends beyond AI, and the same logic applies to interest rates.

Aggressive Fed hikes into a recession likely trigger government intervention that favors Bitcoin, hot inflation without rate hikes pushes investors toward Bitcoin as a store of value, and a soft landing just means steady gains continue.

In his view, nearly every macro scenario funnels into one of three outcomes:

  • Money and credit growing faster than the real economy
  • Scarce assets commanding a premium
  • Bitcoin simply continuing to take market share
Hougan isn't predicting a straight line higher, pointing to Bitcoin's 50% crash during the 2020 COVID panic, followed by a roughly 20x rally, as a reminder that the path can get rough before the thesis plays out.

He also flagged real risks outside the macro picture, including quantum computing threats to old wallets and the possibility of a coordinated global government crackdown, though he considers both unlikely.
