Amazon.com Inc (AMZN  ) has decided to pull the plug on Amp, its live-audio app introduced in March 2022. Amp was a platform where users could emulate radio DJs, combining music playback with live commentary.

This closure comes amidst a series of project terminations by the e-commerce giant.

The app gained traction during the pandemic, offering a unique blend of music and conversation, featuring notable names from the hip-hop community and popular podcasters. Companies including Meta Platforms Inc (META  ), Spotify Technology SA (SPOT  ), and X, formerly Twitter, rolled out live audio features.

Amazon signed big-name artists like Nicki Minaj, Lil Yachty, and Pusha T to host their shows on Amp, CNBC reports.

However, despite its initial allure, the app's journey has been cut short, a decision that Steve Boom, the head of Amazon's digital music unit, described as complex and well-considered.

The discontinuation of Amp is part of a broader pattern of project terminations at Amazon.

Under CEO Andy Jassy's leadership, the company has been streamlining its operations, leading to the discontinuation of several initiatives, including the Amazon Halo wellness devices and the autonomous delivery robot Amazon Scout.

The broader audio industry has witnessed a downturn, with podcast businesses downsizing and companies like Spotify discontinuing their live audio efforts.

The industry pioneer, Clubhouse, has also recalibrated its focus towards more intimate, friend-focused conversations.

Amazon plans to leverage the insights gained from the app to enhance fan experiences on Amazon Music. The focus remains on innovating and evolving to meet the dynamic needs of live-music communities.

Amazon has made other bets in audio and entertainment, including a music streaming platform, Twitch livestreaming service, and audiobooks.

Price Action: AMZN shares traded higher by 0.31% at $127.40 premarket on the last check Thursday.
