The action highlights growing scrutiny on social media companies' handling of minors' information and may influence broader tech-sector sentiment, including peers like Meta Platforms Inc.
Regulatory Findings And Penalty
The ICO imposed a 14.47 million Sterling Pounds ($19.52 million) fine after concluding that Reddit lacked strong verification systems before mid-2025.
Officials said the platform allowed under-13 users to access services without adequate safeguards.
Investigators also noted the company did not complete a detailed data protection risk review until early 2025.
Regulators argued Reddit relied heavily on self-declared ages, which they consider easy to bypass.
The watchdog warned that weak controls could expose minors to unsuitable content. The ICO continues monitoring new measures introduced in July 2025, including content-based age restrictions and verification prompts.
Regulator's Statement
U.K. Information Commissioner John Edwards criticized Reddit's practices, saying: "It's concerning that a company the size of Reddit failed in its legal duty to protect the personal information of UK children." He added, "Reddit failed to meet these expectations. They must do better and we are continuing to consider the age assurance controls now implemented by the platform."
Broader Policy Push
The ICO said children deserve heightened protections under U.K. privacy laws and emphasized compliance with its Children's Code. Officials also said they will coordinate enforcement with Ofcom under the Online Safety Act.
The regulator plans to examine other services that rely heavily on self-declared ages.
