Last week, the DeLorean Motor Company announced that it would be unveiling an electrified successor to its classic, movie-famous car.

The company first teased the return in a tweet made on April 1, posting a blurry photo of its concept car. The company tweeted the full photo on Monday and issued a subsequent news release announcing the successor to its "Back to the Future" famous car.

"Excitement is rising like the doors of our iconic sports car, and we are revealing the next generation prototype 3 days earlier than planned on the most prestigious stage at Pebble Beach," said DeLorean CMO Troy Beetz. The car will debut on August 18 during Monterey Car Week, appearing again at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, held on August 21 after the week's other events.

According to the press release, the new car (the official name will be revealed at Pebble Beach) will be an electric vehicle. The reformed DeLorean Motor Company has openly hinted toward an EV for over a decade.

Based on the company's photo, the sleeker and much sportier-looking EV model retains a similar color scheme and the original car's bumper-length taillights. From the gif on the DeLorean website (which is also reasonably scant on details), the car also retains the classic vertically opening gullwing doors. According to DeLorean, the car comes as the product of over 40 years of development with design company Italdesign.

The return of the DeLorean as an EV comes in a post-Tesla (TSLA  ) era, where the market is only set to get more tight as major automakers ratchet up their EV investments. Major projects such as a massive joint EV manufacturing venture by Stellantis (STLA  ) and LG Energy Solutions will undoubtedly make the electric car market much more competitive in the future. It still seems feasible for DeLorean to carve out some space in the market, especially if it manages to produce a sports car competitive with existing and planned EVs.
