Last week, Twitter (TWTR  ) revealed that it plans on opening up a new feature that would enable various businesses to place a shopping section at the top of user profiles.

This new feature, called "The Shop Module," came out a few days ago in the United States and provides a variety of materials and products for users to peruse. Clicking on a specific product then leads to a listing that offers the choice to buy something without leaving the Twitter page. This service is presently only offered to Mac (AAPL  ) users with iOS devices and are browsing in English.

"People talk about products on Twitter everyday, so we're excited about how this early exploration of the Shop Module can build a bridge between people talking about and discovering products on Twitter to actually purchasing them," Twitter said in a statement.

Twitter's Shop Module pilot came about as a method of earning cash in ways other than through advertising alone. Some of Twitter's other ways of earning money include paid subscription services with premium features, plans to allow individuals to charge to obtain permission to exclusive material, and a Tip jar.

While it still remains uncertain as to whether users will eventually see Twitter as a shopping platform, Twitter nevertheless hopes to more strongly comprehend what could enable individuals to see it more in that light by tracking down the types of materials that bring in traffic to online retailers.

For instance, Twitter would like to see whether or not individuals are driven by online discussions with a hint of thrill or instant gratification, such as sports fans who are inspired to purchase team wear, or whether users would be more engaged with buying materials that have stronger impact in the long run, such as materials for a new skincare routine.

Twitter's new Shop Module, while possibly having a slow start because of its prior reputation of being strictly a social platform, will surely become more known as time goes on. As more users become acquainted with the module, then genuine interest may be piqued, as they discover more about products that they wish to purchase.
