As we previously reported, Trump met with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12. The two signed an agreement committing to further negotiations towards denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Although North Korea has made similar agreements in the past, and while the terms of the agreement remain vague, Trump touted the success of the summit and lavished praise on Kim Jong-un.

There was no such love for China, however. The Trump administration forged ahead with tariffs against China set at 25% across $50 billion worth of Chinese goods. China reacted by imposing tariffs of its own on roughly 1,100 exports in the aerospace, robotics, manufacturing, and auto industries. China expressed its frustration with the administration's shifting position. "The United States has kept changing its mind and now launched a trade war," China's Commerce Ministry said.

Trump also irked Western leaders at the G7 conference with a slew of bizarre comments and his divisive rhetoric on trade and climate change. Trump also made the impolitic suggestion of inviting Russia back to the G7 meeting, though Russia's position has not changed since it was kicked out in 2014 for invading Ukraine and annexing Crimea.

Meanwhile, at home, Trump faced popular outcry against his harsh immigration policy. Formerly, people caught crossing into the US would be held in immigration detention and brought before an immigration judge to be deported as unauthorized immigrants. But the Trump administration has instituted a policy consistent with its zero-tolerance rhetoric on immigration in which some individuals who cross the US border illegally can be referred for criminal prosecution, as a result of which they could face prison time. Because children cannot be brought into the criminal justice system, the government separates children and parents for the duration of the criminal proceedings - which can drag on for weeks or months - putting the children either in large facilities or foster care. To many, this is an unpardonable cruelty, particularly since many of the illegal immigrants are fleeing dire circumstances in their native countries. Trump first responded to the criticism by falsely blaming the Democratic party.

Trump also now faces a new legal challenge, adding to the already-complex web of litigation and investigations surrounding his administration. The New York State Attorney General sued the Donald J. Trump after a two-year investigation, accusing both the foundation and the Trump family of violating campaign finance laws, illegal coordination with his presidential campaign, and self-dealing. The attorney general will attempt to dissolve the Trump foundation and bar President Trump and three of his children from working for nonprofit organizations. The attorney general also sent referrals to the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Election Commission, which may take further action. Trump vowed to fight the case - though he made a similar promise when the New York State Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Trump University, and ultimately paid a $25 million settlement in 2016.
