Snapchat (SNAP  ) has hired the current Head of the United States Secret Service James Murray to be head of security at the social media app, According to various sources, such as the Washington Post. He will leave his current position on July 30 and begin his new role on August 1.

In his new role, he will likely begin working on employee protection and work with the law whenever necessary.

"We're thrilled to welcome Jim Murray to Snap and look forward to him joining our team on August 1," a representative from Snapchat stated in an email to Variety. "Jim will bring a wealth of experience to this new role, which will help ensure the safety and security of the more than 5,000 Snap employees who live and work across the globe."

Since 1990, Murray has served as part of the federal service, working as an investigator for the United States Department of Transportation in addition to working as an officer in the United States Army Reserve. Then, in 1995, Murray became part of the United States Secret Service as an agent in the New York Field Office as an investigator of for technological types of financial crimes.

According to President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, Murray's decision to change roles is quite honorable, with the pair saying in a joint statement: "Jim embodies the meaning of service over self, and protected the families of U.S. Presidents like they were part of his own."

The United States Secret Service website has indicated that Murray currently leads a team of over 7,000 special agents, uniformed division officers, technical law enforcement officers, and other technical type of workers.

Murray will likely be in charge of general safety and security for Snapchat's team of over 5,000 workers, and will be overseen by CEO and co-founder Evan Spiegel.

Though it is not clear as to whether Murray will be a good fit for the role, he will likely be a valuable asset, given his past employment history and general experience in the field of United States security and federal service. This move by Snapchat aims to strengthen the overall level of cybersecurity of the app and may help users to feel generally more safe using this form of social media.
