Pinterest (PINS  ) recently announced the social media platform will incorporate an augmented reality (AR) feature to its app, called "Try On for Home Decor", which will allow users to view furniture from stores such as Crate & Barrel, CB2, Walmart (WMT  ), West Elm (WSM  ), and Wayfair (W  ) right from the comfort of their homes.

The way the AR feature works is that a Lens camera can be utilized in order to test over 80,000 furniture pieces from "shoppable Pins." Then if the user finds the items to be enjoyable, a link will be able to be clicked in order to purchase the intended items.

Since Pinterest permits users to purchase items from a variety of sellers, augmented reality may prove to be a useful way of to shop or buy products. According to Pinterest Senior Vice President of Engineering Jeremy King: "Retailers are happy to work with us because they know people don't typically buy their entire bedroom set from one company. They want a chance to mix and match."

The way that the augmented reality feature on Pinterest works is that savable home décor or furniture pins can be clicked on in order to "try your space." After that, users will be able to move their phones around while the camera attempts to gauge exactly how near or far the objects are. Much of this depends on the angle, but when the item is placed in the proper place, users will be able to click on a check button.

Despite the fact that augmented reality has been around as an option for several years, the choice of shopping with augmented reality has not become popularized yet. Around 50% of United States adults have at least considered shopping with augmented reality, as revealed by an October 2021 survey that was made by Bizrate Insights.

"We're seeing that interest rise slowly but steadily," said Jasmine Enberg, a senior analyst for eMarketer, quoted by CNET. "It's young people primarily who are leading the way for shopping with AR."
