NVIDIA Corp (NVDA  ) stock gained by almost half a percent on Monday as traders stay selective in mega-cap tech while the broader tape is mixed. The Nasdaq is up 0.26% while the S&P 500 has shed 0.08%. The company is extending its AI strategy beyond chips by securing long-term data-center capacity in Ohio for OpenAI, while also reworking the financing structure to limit its initial exposure as it pursues a potential hundreds-of-billions-of-dollars computing opportunity through 2030.

NVIDIA Secures 4.25-Gigawatt AI Campus Capacity

NVIDIA partnered with SB Energy to secure land, power and building capacity at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio, exclusively for NVIDIA computing systems. OpenAI will use the capacity, while SB Energy will build, own and operate the data center under a 20-year lease to OpenAI.

The initial deployment will support 4.25 gigawatts of AI computing capacity using NVIDIA GPUs, CPUs, networking and software. NVIDIA also has the option to secure another 3.75 gigawatts at the site.

CEO Jensen Huang said, "AI is becoming infrastructure - the foundation for intelligence in every industry - and land, power and shell have become vital in the age of AI."

He said the project will secure long-term infrastructure for NVIDIA computing systems, allowing OpenAI to expand and continually upgrade its AI capacity as new generations of technology arrive.

NVIDIA expects the long-lived site to support repeated hardware upgrades. The company estimates that each generation of systems deployed at PORTS-Pike could involve about 1.5 million NVIDIA GPUs and represent roughly $150 billion to $200 billion of NVIDIA revenue.

NVIDIA will also invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, joining existing investors Softbank Group Corp. (SFTBY  ) and OpenAI.

The investment will support SB Energy's expansion as an AI infrastructure developer and its commitments to communities surrounding the Ohio project.

NVIDIA, OpenAI Rework Financing to Reduce Risk

Separately, NVIDIA and OpenAI are nearing a financing agreement for the Ohio campus that would reduce NVIDIA's initial financial guarantee, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The revised structure would cut NVIDIA's potential guarantee from $250 billion to less than $120 billion, with NVIDIA initially backing only about half of the planned buildout, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The companies reworked the structure after investors raised concerns about NVIDIA using its balance sheet to support infrastructure spending that ultimately drives demand for its chips.

OpenAI Commitments Expand NVIDIA's Revenue Opportunity

OpenAI has committed to substantial NVIDIA infrastructure deployments through 2030, representing about 12 gigawatts of Nvidia computing capacity. That could increase to roughly 16 gigawatts if NVIDIA exercises its option for additional PORTS-Pike capacity.

At that scale, NVIDIA estimates the OpenAI opportunity could represent about $600 billion of computing systems through 2030.

NVIDIA argues that frontier AI developers increasingly face computing-capacity constraints because their infrastructure requirements can grow faster than their balance sheets and financing capacity. By helping secure land, power and facilities, NVIDIA aims to remove those constraints while creating long-term demand for successive generations of its AI systems.
