Just weeks after launching its bid to acquire ARM Holdings (ARMH  ), NVIDIA (NVDA  ) announced that it is set to develop a supercomputer for the United Kingdom. The Cambridge-1 supercomputer will be used by health researchers to conduct AI-based studies.

NVIDIA's press release outlines the company's plans for the computer, as well as technical aspects.

"Expected to come online by year-end, the "Cambridge-1" supercomputer will be an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD™ system capable of delivering more than 400 petaflops of AI performance and eight petaflops of Linpack performance, which would rank it No. 29 on the latest TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers. It will also rank among the world's top 3 most energy-efficient supercomputers on the current Green500 list." NVIDIA said in its release.

The computer will be used by various organizations, including major corporations, startups, and academic researchers. Among the private entities to use Cambridge-1, which is expected to become operational by the end of 2020, are GSK (GSK  ) and AstraZeneca (AZN  ). King's College of London is also set to utilize the computer in its research, as is the National Health Service.

"The use of big data, supercomputing and artificial intelligence have the potential to transform research and development; from target identification through clinical research and all the way to the launch of new medicines." Said Dr. James Weatherall of AstraZeneca.

The use of AI by medical researchers is still a growing field, but the applications of AI (and supercomputing in general) in the field of medicine are extensive. AI is commonly used in medical research to pore over large datasets and speed up the analytical process. Overall, using AI in medical research is more cost-efficient and can deliver more precise results for researchers.

The development of NVIDIA's newest supercomputer has been a boon for its shares, with investors appearing to be just as excited at the prospect of Cambridge-1 as researchers. NVIDIA shares traded up on Monday after the company delivered its announcement, with NVIDIA's share price perched comfortably 3% higher after market close on Monday, jumping to $545.70 from $530.01. NVIDIA's shares have fluctuated somewhat in the days since, but is still up from Monday's closing price at $558.01 at noon on Wednesday.
