Microsoft Corp. (MSFT  ) is set to introduce the Surface Laptop Ultra on Wednesday. The Windows machine runs on Nvidia Corp. (NVDA  ) RTX Spark chips and is built to run AI agents on the device instead of in the cloud.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will present it together at a San Francisco event starting at 1 p.m. ET.

The idea is simple. AI agents would write code or work through complex business projects on the laptop itself, rather than in the cloud.

Microsoft's Cost Math

For Microsoft, the laptop is a bet that some work now done in its expensive Azure data centers can move to high-powered Windows PCs, where customers pay for the hardware, according to Reuters. Apple Inc. (AAPL  ) is going after the same opportunity with new Macs.

Huang laid out the economics in June. "Look how beautiful it is - this agent could run 24/7, meter-free," he said at Computex, per CNBC. "No meter anxiety."

Price could be the sticking point. A memory-chip shortage has pushed PC prices higher. Nvidia recently raised the price of its DGX Spark AI desktop by about 75% to $6,950 because of rising costs for its 128 gigabytes of memory.

"Now the software is ready and the hardware is too expensive to actually run it locally," Moor Insights & Strategy analyst Anshel Sag told Reuters.

Why Intel Should Worry

The bigger competitive risk falls on Intel Corp. (INTC  ). Windows PCs are one of the last major markets controlled by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD  ), and Nvidia wants in.

Nvidia developed the RTX Spark with Taiwan's MediaTek. The chip uses Arm architecture instead of the x86 instruction set Intel pioneered in the 1970s, CNBC reported.

Its unified memory lets the processor and graphics chip share the same memory, so larger AI models can run on the device. Each Arm-based Windows laptop that wins buyers takes ground from x86.

Intel has a lot at stake. Its client computing group, which mostly sells PC chips, brought in $32.2 billion in revenue in 2025. It is still Intel's largest unit, with second-quarter revenue up 13% to $8.9 billion, CNBC reported. Intel also expects flat third-quarter PC sales because of the memory shortage.

Investors have reacted to Nvidia's innovations before. On the day Intel unveiled the RTX Spark chip in June, the stock fell more than 6% in premarket trading and closed down over 4%. RTX Spark PCs are due from Microsoft, Dell, HP, ASUS, Lenovo and MSI, CNBC reported.

Limits to the Threat

The near-term damage may be small. Chip analyst Patrick Moorhead said Nvidia could sell 10 million PC chips over the next two years. IDC estimates 296 million PC chips shipped in 2025, CNBC reported. Seaport Research Partners' Jay Goldberg doesn't expect material numbers from Nvidia's PC chips "any time soon."

The two companies are also tied together. In September 2025, Nvidia agreed to invest $5 billion in Intel and co-develop data center and PC chips with it. As a result, Intel is now partly partnered with the company as it goes after its core market.
