After taking the lead with the most Golden Globe nominations, Netflix Inc (NFLX  ) has done it again with the most number of Oscar nominations. Netflix, the video streaming giant founded back in 1997, received 24 nominations.

Films "The Irishman"and "Marriage Story"earned Netflix a combined 16 nominations this year. "The Irishman" was directed by Martin Scorsese, and "Marriage Story" was written and directed by Noah Baumbach.

Several of Netflix's other nominations included the movie "The Two Popes," animated feature films "Klaus" and "I Lost My Body," documentary short "Life Overtakes Me," and feature documentaries "American Factory" and "The Edge of Democracy."

Netflix has been gaining major traction in the awards world over the past few years. In 2014, Netflix received one Oscar nomination but later in 2018 was up to eight nominations. Last year, Netflix was nominated 15 times, and this year the company has outdone itself with 24 nominations.

Walt Disney Co (DIS  ) closely followed Netflix's lead with 23 nominations, which included nominations of films made by Disney's studios as well as studios that Disney recently acquired, including Fox Searchlight Pictures. Fox Searchlight, formerly Searchlight Pictures of 21st Century Fox, was acquired by Disney in 2019.

Sony Pictures Releasing came in third following Disney with 20 nominations. Sony Pictures' parent organization is Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., which is a subsidiary of Sony Entertainment, Inc., owned by Sony Corporation (SNE  ).

Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. was nominated 12 times, 11 of which were for the film "Joker," the most-nominated film of the year. Warner Bros. is a subsidiary of WarnerMedia, which is owned by AT&T (T  ).

However, despite receiving the most number of nominations, there's no guarantee that Netflix will walk away with the most Academy Awards. When it came to the last Golden Globes, Netflix earned just two awards after receiving an impressive 34 nominations.

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will take place on February 9, 2020 in Hollywood and will air live on ABC, a network owned by Disney.
