In a fresh development, Microsoft Corporation (MSFT  ) has rolled out a new web-based version of its application store for Windows, replacing the existing way of locating Windows apps online, according to a recent The Verge report.

What Happened

Microsoft's tech team has successfully revamped its outdated React codebase from the previous web version of the Microsoft Store, replacing it with cutting-edge web technologies like Shoelace, Lit, Vite, and a C# ASPNET backend.

As per Microsoft engineer Judah Gabriel, the new design provides an enhanced user interface that simplifies the process of searching for Windows apps or Xbox PC games, which can be downloaded through the main Microsoft Store app on Windows. Notably, the web store will not replace the main Microsoft Store app.

Gabriel said on X, formerly Twitter, that the old site was built on an "obsoleted UI framework" and that they've now created a "fresh user experience." He said, "I hope folks will find it useful."

Microsoft's initiative to upgrade its app store comes amidst its ambition to expand its apps and games beyond the Windows platform. Earlier this year, Xbox chief Phil Spencer unveiled plans to launch an Xbox mobile gaming store, potentially in 2024.

Why It Matters

In a strategic shift, Microsoft announced in August 2023 that it would be discontinuing its Xbox 360 online store and marketplace by 2024, as reported by Benzinga.

The tech giant's decision aligns with its focus on its newest consoles and the Game Pass subscription service.

The introduction of the new web-based app store for Windows appears to be a part of this larger strategy, aimed at streamlining its services and enhancing the user experience across platforms.
