In an attempt to compete with Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter), Mark Zuckerberg's Threads has launched an edit button even as X charges users money to edit posts.

What Happened: Meta Platforms Inc.'s (META  ) announced the two new features: an edit button and voice threads. The edit feature gives users a five-minute time frame to amend any mistakes or typos in their posts, which are subsequently marked with a pencil symbol.

On the other hand, users on X require an X Premium subscription to be able to edit posts.

In addition to the edit button, Threads has also launched voice threads as a new means of user interaction on the platform. Users can press down on the microphone icon to record their voice, with Threads automatically generating captions.

Introducing these features follows the recent addition of a profile switcher and is a part of Meta's strategy to improve Threads and keep users engaged. Unlike Twitter's paid edit feature, Threads offers its version free of charge, albeit with a shorter editing duration.

Why It Matters: The addition of these features is a strategic move by Threads to compete with Twitter and retain its user base. By offering a free edit feature and introducing voice threads, it actively seeks to make its platform more user-friendly and interactive. This also indicates the company's commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in response to user needs and preferences.

As competition in the social media space continues to heat up, it will be interesting to see how Threads' new offerings will impact user engagement and growth.
