UK-based Burberry (BURBY  ), a luxury brand, is set to release high-end reusable face masks, the first announcement of such product in a possible growing trend in luxury retail. For about $118 (or £90), consumers will soon be able to purchase masks made from excess material from Burberry's regular fashion collections. A release date has yet to be announced.

Twenty percent of mask sales will go to help workers on the pandemic frontline, as well as global communities impacted by the pandemic, through the Burberry Foundation Covid-19 Community Fund, which is operated by The Burberry Foundation. In addition to financial donations, the Burberry fund has already donated an impressive 160,000 pieces of PPE gear, or personal protective equipment, since April.

Available colors of Burberry's face masks will include beige and pale blue, and a small pouch intended for travel will be enclosed with each mask. More colors and prints will be released over the next few months.

Furthermore, Burberry's masks will be "treated with antimicrobial technologies to prevent bacteria growth," offering distinct consumer appeal compared to other reusable face masks without antimicrobial feature. While this quality doesn't offer any additional protection against the pandemic, it does seem to be an overall helpful hygienic feature considering that face masks are worn over the mouth and nose for extended periods of time.

Whether consumers will flock to Burberry's reusable face masks as one of the latest fashion trends or be put off by companies seemingly profiting from the pandemic, that remains to be seen at this point. However, it does seem likely that these luxury masks will at least appeal to some more wealthy consumers who already generally purchase expensive items in a variety of areas.

In fact, other high-end fashion labels have been following suit since Burberry's initial announcement, including Italian-based luxury brand Missoni and Beverly Hills-based Bijan, which offers pure silk masks available through special-order. Louis Vuitton (LVMUY  ), French fashion giant, will also become involved in the newly-emerging retail trend shortly with an intended October 30 debut date of LV Shield, a protective visor.

Additional brands releasing luxury reusable face masks include Virgil Abloh's Italian label Off-White, Collina Strada, Akris, VPL, Proenza Schouler, and fashion designers Christian Siriano and Michael Ngo.
