The partnership will use advanced AI technology to identify potential drug targets and develop therapies for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and cardiomyopathies.
AstraZeneca Bets on AI to Accelerate Drug Discovery
Under the agreement, Insitro will use its Virtual Human AI platform to uncover the biological and genetic drivers of these diseases.
The platform combines large-scale human and cellular data with AI-powered analysis to identify promising drug targets and support the design of new medicines.
Insitro will advance selected targets through the discovery process to the development candidate stage. AstraZeneca will then use its clinical development and regulatory expertise to bring potential treatments closer to patients.
AstraZeneca executive Sharon Barr said identifying the right biological targets remains a major challenge in drug development. She expects the partnership to improve target selection and accelerate the discovery of potential therapies.
Insitro CEO Daphne Koller highlighted the potential of AI to uncover genetic insights into MASH and cardiomyopathies, two conditions that remain underdiagnosed and difficult to treat.
Deal Could Reach $1.5 Billion in Payments
Under the agreement, AstraZeneca will pay Insitro $40 million upfront.
Insitro could also receive approximately $1.46 billion in development and commercial milestone payments, bringing the total potential deal value to about $1.5 billion.
Additionally, Insitro is eligible for single-digit royalties on global commercial sales of resulting therapies.
AstraZeneca will hold exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialize selected programs identified through the collaboration.
Expanding AstraZeneca's Cardiometabolic Pipeline
The agreement supports AstraZeneca's broader strategy to expand its cardiovascular, renal and metabolism business.
The company is developing treatments that address the underlying causes of diseases affecting the heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas.
By integrating AI into early-stage research, AstraZeneca aims to improve drug discovery efficiency and strengthen its pipeline of potential cardiometabolic therapies.
AZN Price Action: AstraZeneca shares were up 4.05% at $168.60 at the time of publication on Thursday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
