Stellantis (STLA  ) alongside LG Energy Solution recently announced the pair will invest about $4.1 billion to create the first, large scale electric vehicle manufacturing plant located in Canada.

Plans to create the plant will start later in the year in Windsor, Ontario throughout the first quarter of 2024, says Stellantis. The plant can anticipate carrying over 45 gigawatt hours in terms of yearly production capacity and will likely make around 2,500 new jobs as soon as it is launched.

Since Canada is dedicated to creating a strong ecosystem in terms of its battery supply chain, it would like to find other ways that it can support itself, particularly when it comes to the formulation of energy from renewable sources.

"Our joint venture with LG Energy Solution is yet another stepping stone to achieving our aggressive electrification roadmap in the region aimed at hitting 50% of battery electric vehicle sales in the U.S. and Canada by the end of the decade," said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, in a press statement. "We are grateful to the Municipal, Provincial and Federal levels of government for their support and commitment to help position Canada as a North American leader in the production of electric vehicle batteries."

According to officials at the event that announced the opening of the Windsor location, another facility will be established in North America sometime in the near future. While the exact location remains unknown, it will be announced sometime in the upcoming weeks.

Although Stellantis has been much slower when it comes to adapting to electric vehicles than companies such as Ford (F  ) and General Motors (GM  ), the company has recently said that it plans to reach sales of five million electric vehicles by the year 2030.

The automobile industry, while not completely aligned with the making and usage of electric vehicles yet, has experienced a slow and steady need to further develop battery manufacturing. According to GlobalData, growth rates are predicted to go from 95.3GWh to 410.5GWh by the year 2024.
