Telecommunications giant Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) looks to fend off concerns about competition from SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) when the company reports third-quarter financial results Monday before market open.
Here are the earnings estimates and key items to watch.
Verizon Q3 Earnings Estimates
Analysts expect Verizon to report third-quarter revenue of $34.74 billion, up from $33.82 billion in last year's third quarter, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
The company has beaten analyst estimates for revenue in six straight quarters and in eight of the last 10 quarters overall. The other two quarters saw revenue that was in line with estimates.
Analysts expect Verizon to report third-quarter earnings per share of $1.27, up from $1.21 in last year's third quarter.
The company has missed analyst estimates for earnings per share in two straight quarters and in six of the last 10 quarters overall.
Key Items to Watch
Analysts have been fairly quiet on Verizon stock ahead of earnings with Scotiabank recently maintaining a Sector Perform rating and lowering the price target from $52 to $50. Other analyst ratings on Benzinga date back to July or earlier.
Verizon enters the quarter with investors increasingly concerned about the spectrum recently acquired by SpaceX's Starlink unit and what it could mean for competition going forward.
Starlink looks ready to launch mobile services in America, a move that would challenge the big 3 carriers (T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon). This move could hurt Verizon's subscriber base and margins, as the company would likely have to ramp up marketing to keep existing subscribers and win new ones.
The SpaceX unit could offer service at a lower price, combo mobile with internet and also provide better rural connections. These worries may overshadow the results from Verizon and need the company to report stellar figures, raise guidance and brush off competitor concerns.A dividend raise could also win over some investors. The company will pay out $0.7075 for every share for the third and fourth quarters of this year, marking three straight quarters at that amount. The company typically increases the payout after every three quarters. With a yield of 6.3%, dividend investors may be increasingly looking at Verizon. In the second quarter, the company put emphasis on simpler wireless plans, loyalty rewards and bundled offerings.
While Verizon revenue was down year over year in the second quarter, adjusted EBITDA, earnings per share, operating cash flow, and free cash flow were all up, with adjusted EBITDA hitting a quarterly record.
This may be one of the last quarters that Verizon operates without Starlink offering mobile service. That puts increased emphasis on strong results and strong guidance.
