SK Hynix To Expand Japan Investments

SK hynix Inc (NASDAQ: SKHY) stock edged higher in Monday premarket trading as investors weighed the chipmaker's potential Japan expansion against a slightly softer broader market backdrop. The stock gained less than 0.5%, while Nasdaq futures rose 0.05% and S&P 500 futures slipped 0.14%.

SK Hynix Explores Japan Memory Venture

SK hynix is exploring a memory-chip joint venture in Japan as it looks to capture more value from surging AI demand while managing production costs.

Chairman Chey Tae-won said the company is evaluating several locations across Japan, with access to reliable power and water among its priorities, Bloomberg reported Monday.

Chey did not disclose potential partners, locations or products under consideration.

A person familiar with the discussions told Bloomberg that SK hynix could also consider a small acquisition in Japan. The eventual structure could involve a joint venture or co-investment, depending on the partner and product.

AI Demand Drives Global Expansion

A Japan investment would further expand SK hynix's manufacturing footprint as demand for high-bandwidth memory and NAND grows alongside AI spending.

The company is already expanding production in South Korea and building an advanced memory packaging facility in Indiana.

SK hynix is also strengthening relationships with Japanese customers and suppliers. CEO Kwak Noh-Jung recently said the company is "carefully looking at how we can co-develop the NAND flash market with our customers and suppliers."

Chey has also highlighted closer economic ties between South Korea and Japan, saying the countries can complement each other as cooperation deepens.

Miyagi Plant Also Under Consideration

Earlier reports said SK hynix is considering a memory-chip manufacturing facility in Japan's Miyagi prefecture, potentially involving tens of trillions of won in investment.

Chey recently visited the region. If SK hynix proceeds, the project would represent the first large-scale semiconductor manufacturing investment in Japan by a South Korean chipmaker.
