Box Inc. (NYSE: BOX) CEO Aaron Levie said a decline in the cost of frontier AI models could significantly expand the number of tasks that companies can economically automate with AI agents. Frontier AI Gets Cheaper
Levie said on social media platform X on Tuesday, "What an insane day in AI," as he highlighted recent price cuts for frontier AI models.
"The frontier models just became substantially cheaper, with the Opus 5.5 price cuts, and now with GPT-6 Sol and Luna dropping token prices by 50%," Levie said.
He argued that the decline in AI costs is happening at an unprecedented pace.
"The rate at which the cost per task (on a like-for-like basis) drops in AI is unlike any other type of technology in history," Levie said.
Cheaper AI, More Agent Use
Levie argued that lower AI costs could lead to more applications for AI agents.
"And every time the cost of AI drops, the use-cases you can deploy agents against dramatically increase," he wrote, describing the trend as "Jevons paradox applied to agents."
He said these improvements could "directly lead to broader diffusion of AI in the economy," allowing agents to "process all of our data, scan our code for security issues, read through all log data to make decisions, have agent swarms in workflows, and much more."
Levie added, "The cost of tokens is directly correlated to these use-cases being opened up at scale."
OpenAI Cuts AI Costs
OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna with API prices up to 50% lower than GPT-5.6's promotional pricing, as Anthropic also reduced the cost of its latest model.
The moves highlighted growing competition to make AI agents cheaper and more efficient to deploy at scale.
AI Agents Reshape Work
In June, Anthropic reported that close to six in 10 survey respondents expected AI to handle a greater share of their work tasks within a year, while more than one-third expected AI to be capable of performing most or nearly all of their work tasks.
Earlier this year, former Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) AI chief and ex-OpenAI researcher Andrej Karpathy said AI agents had dramatically changed his coding workflow, with him barely writing code since December.
He also built "Dobby," an AI assistant that managed smart-home functions, including lighting, climate control, security monitoring and delivery alerts.
