October 28 Market Summary

Global investors on Friday digested new data, policy statements, and earnings reports. In Europe, the MOEX Russia Index edged up 0.14%, the British FTSE dipped 0.37%, the German DAX edged up 0.24%, the French CAC rose 0.46%, and the broad STOXX 600 index edged up 0.14%. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) rose 2.59% to 32,861.8 to record its fourth straight week of gains, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) fell 2.87% to 11,102.45, and the broad S&P 500 (.INX) index climbed 2.46% to 3,901.06. The small cap Russell 2000 (.RUT) rose 2.25%, and the VIX volatility index fell 5.99%.

In the S&P 500, the biggest decliners were led by kidney care firm Davita (NYSE: DVA), whose shares cratered 27.09% after it reported earnings that missed estimates and lowered its full year outlook. The other biggest decliners were medical technology firm Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE: EW), down 17.88%, life science research firm Bio-Rad Laboratories (NYSE: BIO), down 7.98%, ecommerce and tech giant Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), down 6.80%, and medical device firm ResMed (NYSE: RMD), down 5.77%. The biggest gainers were led by diabetes management firm DexCom (NASDAQ: DXCM), whose shares soared 19.38% after reporting earnings that beat estimates and lifting its full year guidance. The other biggest gainers were biopharmaceutical firm Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ: GILD), up 12.92%, semiconductor firm Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), up 10.66%, network infrastructure firm Verisign (NASDAQ: VRSN), up 9.46%, and biopharmaceutical firm Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: VRTX), up 6.58%.

In the Nasdaq, ADR shares of Chinese ecommerce firm JD.com (NASDAQ: JD) fell 4.15% and Chinese technology firm Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU) fell 2.98%, while technology giant Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) jumped 7.56% and wireless network firm T-Mobile US (NASDAQ: TMUS) jumped 7.37%. Among COVID stocks, biopharmaceutical firm AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) fell 3.84%, while biotechnology firm Inovio Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INO) rose 7.28%. In fixed income markets, the yields on Treasury bonds largely edged up, and the 2-year yield rose 0.093%.

As of press time, in commodities markets, the price of international Brent crude oil futures dipped 0.79%, and US West Texas Intermediate crude dipped 0.88%. The price of natural gas futures slipped 1.16%. The price of gold futures slipped 1.09%, silver slipped 1.59%, platinum rose 1.77%, palladium slipped 1.84%, copper fell 2.37%, wheat futures dipped 0.98%, soybean rose 0.47%, coffee fell 3.58%, cotton fell 3.99%, rough rice rose 0.95%, and lean hogs futures rose 1.17%. In crypto asset markets, the price of Bitcoin (BTC) rose 1.47%, Ether (ETH) rose 2.70%, Binance Coin (BNB) 4.86%, XRP rose 1.69%, and Cardano (ADA) rose 2.96%.
